Coldfall wood in Haringey is a 14-hectare Site of Borough Importance (Grade I).
Woodland Ecology and Archaeology
Coldfall Wood is ancient woodland consisting of predominantly oak standards above hornbeam coppice. The ancient origin of the wood gives it considerable heritage value, which is further augmented by the long continuity of coppice management.
Threats prior to Capital Woodlands
Coldfall wood is typical of the threats affecting London’s woodlands and has suffered from a lack of management for many years. Neglect has led to general disrepair of paths, seating and entrances and no interpretation in the wood. These barriers to access contribute towards a growing fear of crime in the woodland, which is exacerbated by the dark canopy and occasional vandalism.
The stream is a characteristic feature of the woodland that greatly contributes to the overall biodiversity and heritage value of the wood, however the stream suffered from intermittent pollution, and often flooded in the winter months.
Capital Woodlands Programme
Woodland management includes extending the area of coppicing in the wood to increase levels of light and create more welcoming entrances to the wood, as well as to enhance the biodiversity value of the wood.
Work is continuing to overcome the ongoing pollution of the stream with the creation of a new reed bed system and restoration of the original stream. This work is complemented by access work to improve the infrastructure of the woodland including repair or bridges, paths and fencing, installation of additional seating and noticeboards.
Community outreach work builds on the programme of guided walks and talks already offered to broaden the range of audience groups that participate. New activities include the development of a nature trail for children and adults with a map that can be downloaded from the Haringey Council website. Click the image below.
